Just 30 minutes of exercise a day may help relieve asthma symptoms

30 minutes of exercise

New research suggests just 30 minutes of exercise each day may relieve asthma symptoms in adults. A research done by Concordia University, the Hopital du Sacre-Coeur de Montreal and four other institutions in Canada and France found that those who took part in maximum levels of physical exercise on a daily basis were nearly 2 12 times more likely to have favorable control of their asthma than those who did not exercise at all.

More and more studies are showing benefits of just 30 minutes of exercise. One such study last year found that just 30 minutes of jogging may add 9 years to your life.

The exercise to relieve asthma symptoms does not have to be strenuous, explained lead author Simon Bacon, a professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He adds:

“Just 30 minutes a day of walking, riding a bike, doing yoga -- anything active, really -- can result in significant reduction of asthma symptoms.”

Many people use inhalers to ease asthma symptoms. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness are common symptoms. [Read more Drinking beet juice boosts muscle strength in heart failure patients]

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are about 18.4 million adults and 6.8 million children affected by asthma in the United States.

In the UK, there are about 4.3 million adults and 1.1 million children currently receiving treatment for asthma. [Read more Prolonged stress destroys memory, new study reveals]

Traditionally, people were discouraged to perform exercise to relieve asthma symptoms because it was thought to cause shortness of breath and trigger asthma attacks. The researchers explained that discomforts caused by physical activity could be avoided by taking simple precautionary measures.
It is well known that exercise induces bronchospasm, but if someone uses reliever medication such as blue puffer before exercising, and take time to cool down afterwards, it is okay, explains Prof. Bacon. Even someone with asthma can go out and exercise, he adds.

The researchers analyzed exercise habits of 643 adults with asthma. From the group, a whopping 245 reported doing no exercise and only 100 reported taking part in optimal 30 minutes of exercise every day to relieve asthma symptoms.

According to Prof. Bacon, the numbers reflect the population in general where 40 percent people do not take part in any kind of physical exercise. He urged people to remember that doing even a little exercise is beneficial in easing asthma symptoms.

He points to the importance of physical exercise all throughout the year. He suggests during the winter season when fitness level in adults tends to decline and cold temperature can trigger attack, people should be more active in physical exercise to ease asthma symptoms.

"It's all about being creative and finding environments where the cold doesn't become an issue,” says Prof. Bacon.

He advises people to go to the gym if they do not like exercising outside. If people do not prefer gym then they should use the staircase or shopping mall. [স্বল্প শর্করাযুক্ত খাদ্য তালিকায় আপনি কি খেতে পারেন?]
He concluded by saying that he would like to see doctors recommend physical activity alongside traditional pharmacological treatments to patients in order to relieve asthma symptoms.
The study was published in the journal BMJ Open Respiratory Research.
